The Whales

about us

I have made my living in wood since 1969, making (at different times) boxes, cutting boards, toys and jewelry.

While living in the northwest corner of Connecticut I worked for many years for an antique restorer who’s business morphed into making shorebird decoys.  I stayed on and continued to make birds, meanwhile doing carvings of my own on the side.

Thus in 1979 Mere Whimsey began. I made everything from folk art figures & animal carvings to reproduction trade signs.  When my wife joined me in 1981 as “the painter”, the business blossomed enough to go out on our own.

Painted Wood Carving Whales

Rose is from a creative family that can boast several professional musicians, an opera singer, a Shakespearean actor and a fashion designer.  Her grandmother sang with the Ziegfeld Follies!  Rose was a natural.  At first we sold wholesale to shops from Hawaii to Cape cod then began doing craft shows up and down the east coast.  At times we have made as many as 70 different items.  Now, belatedly, we’ve decided to venture into online sales starting with our line of whale carvings.  While we are newcomers to Internet sales we have been in business for over 30 years.
